LPG Burner Compatibility & Installation Guide

This guide is designed to help you understand gas type compatibility, regulator and hose requirements, and safe installation practices for our gas stove burners. Always follow your appliance manufacturer's instructions and all applicable local regulations.

1. LPG, Propane & Butane — What's the Difference?

LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is a collective term that covers both propane and butane, as well as blends of the two. Here's a quick comparison:

  • Propane — Performs well in cold temperatures (down to around -40°C). Suitable for year-round outdoor use in the UK climate. Stored in red cylinders.
  • Butane — Best suited to mild temperatures (above approximately 0°C). Can struggle to vaporise in cold weather. Stored in blue cylinders.
  • Propane/Butane Blends — Offer a balance of both, often used in camping or portable applications.

Check your burner's product listing or manual to confirm which gas type(s) it is approved for before use.

2. Regulator Requirements

A gas regulator reduces the high pressure inside a cylinder to a safe, usable level for your appliance. Using the correct regulator is essential for safe operation.

  • Regulators are not universal — propane and butane cylinders use different fittings and pressure ratings.
  • Always use a regulator that is approved for the gas type and cylinder you are using.
  • In the UK, regulators must comply with BS EN 16129 or the relevant British Standard for the application.
  • Do not exceed the output pressure specified by the burner manufacturer. Refer to your appliance manual for the required inlet pressure.
  • Replace regulators that show signs of wear, cracking, or damage — never attempt to repair them.

Note: Specific pressure figures are not listed here as they vary by appliance and cylinder type. Always refer to your manufacturer's documentation.

3. Hose Requirements

  • Use only hoses rated for LPG and approved to BS EN 16436 (or equivalent UK/EU standard).
  • Ensure the hose is the correct diameter and length — avoid unnecessary excess length, which can create a trip or fire hazard.
  • Inspect hoses regularly for cracks, kinks, abrasion, or perishing. Replace immediately if damage is found.
  • Secure all connections with appropriate clips or fittings — never use tape as a sealant.
  • Hoses have a recommended service life (typically 5 years); check the date stamped on the hose and replace when due.

4. Outdoor Use & Ventilation

  • Our gas stove burners are designed for outdoor use only unless the specific product listing states otherwise.
  • Never use an outdoor gas burner in an enclosed space — this includes tents, garages, caravans, or any area without adequate airflow. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a serious and potentially fatal risk.
  • Always operate burners in a well-ventilated area, away from flammable materials, overhanging structures, and dry vegetation.
  • Keep a safe distance from other people, children, and pets during operation.
  • Do not use in high winds without appropriate wind shielding designed for the appliance.

5. Professional Installation — When Is It Required?

  • Portable or standalone outdoor burners connected to a standard cylinder with a regulator and hose can typically be set up by a competent adult following the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Any permanent or semi-permanent gas installation — including fixed pipework, built-in outdoor kitchens, or connections to a mains gas supply — must be carried out by a Gas Safe Registered engineer in the UK. It is a legal requirement.
  • If you are unsure whether your installation requires a professional, always err on the side of caution and consult a Gas Safe engineer. You can find a registered engineer at www.gassaferegister.co.uk.

6. What's Supplied vs. What You May Need Separately

Please check the individual product listing for full details of what is included. In general:

  • Typically supplied: The burner unit itself, and any fittings or accessories listed in the product description.
  • Typically sold separately: Gas cylinder, regulator, connecting hose, and any site-specific fittings. These must be sourced to match your specific gas type and local requirements.
